GORILLA TREKKING

Virungas and Northern Rwanda, Rwanda

Gorilla tracking in Parc National des Volcanoes, through the mountainous forest on the slopes of the Virunga range, is a magical experience. Seeing a mountain gorilla in its natural habitat is one of the world’s most thrilling wildlife experiences.

Trekking up the steep-sides of Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park to stand face to face with a mountain gorilla is unforgettable and one of Africa’s great wildlife encounters. Watch as they lounge in the vegetation, eating bamboo shoots or forage for stinging nettles, with uncannily human movements. Youngsters play chase in a clearing, and babies clamber on their mother’s back, providing endless photographic opportunities. The trek to reach the gorillas can take anywhere from an hour to up to five hours, the duration depending on time of year and which gorilla group you have been allocated to visit. The lower slopes change from farmland to dense bamboo forest, moving through to stinging nettles and into lush rainforest vegetation. More often than not you are not on a set trail, instead following the guide through untouched forest, sometimes clambering over fallen tree trunks, all heightening the sense of adventure and anticipation. You are permitted one precious hour with these fascinating apes and this time flies by! Soon you’ll be returning back to your lodge, filled with a lifetime worth of stories and memories of this incredible experience.

Gorilla permits cost $750 per person and specific gorilla groups cannot be pre-booked, rather the park rangers choose which group you will see on the day.

There are strict gorilla tracking rules which include a maximum number of 8 visitors may visit a group of habituated mountain gorillas in a day. This minimizes behavioural disturbance to the gorillas and the risk of their exposure to human-borne diseases. There is also a minimum age requirement of 15. People are also not allowed to trek the gorillas if they are at all sick.

KIGALI GENOCIDE MEMORIAL CENTRE

Kigali and Central Rwanda, Rwanda

Visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial Museum should be on everybody’s must-do list when in the area. The memorial is a haunting but stark journey through one of the most savage genocides in history, that took place in this tiny, landlocked country.

This incredible Memorial Centre takes you through the story of what happened with enormous visual and emotional impact. It was opened on the 10th Anniversary of the Rwandan Genocide, in April 2004. It is a permanent memorial to those who lost their lives in the genocide. The Centre includes three permanent exhibitions, the largest of which documents the genocide in 1994. Upstairs there is a room dedicated to the children of the genocide which cannot fail to move you and then there is an exhibition room covering other World Genocides. An experience that is exceptionally moving and a valuable insight into the atrocities that occurred, it takes you through the entire period, giving you a complete insight into the genocide in 1994 and the whole lead up to it, right from when the Belgians created the Tutsi and Hutu territories in 1918. This memorial centre is a true testament to how the country has recovered in the last 20 years.

WALKING SAFARIS IN RUAHA

There’s nothing quite like the exhilaration of a walking safari and Ruaha National Park is a prime spot for exploring on foot.

Set off with your expert safari guide, tracking wildlife by their footprints, watching for marks on trees and plants. Take in the minute details, such as a caterpillar crossing the path, or stop to admire a honeyguide bird as it skips through the trees. Being out on foot offers you the opportunity to quietly take in your surroundings, and see the wildlife on their terms. Warthogs won’t scarper as far, impala may snort and run but then turn to look you in the eye – in every way this is different to being on a game drive.

A DHOW TRIP ON THE COAST OF ZANZIBAR

Sailing in a dhow, the traditional sailing boat used in Zanzibar, is the best way to view the island’s coastline. Sailing in the late evening to watch the sun set is the best time of day and is wonderfully romantic.

The image of a dhow sailing across the sunset is a typical postcard scene, and these simple wooden sailboats are dotted along the coastline of Zanzibar. These boats have been used since the 18th century, and are still used now, both as a tourist activity offering tours around the island, and as a source of local transport.

Whilst it is easy to find a dhow trip around Zanzibar, the best route to take is to the north of Zanzibar to visit the small island of Mnemba, to view its beautiful untouched and secluded coast.

BLUE SAFARI AROUND ZANZIBAR

BOAT SAFARI IN THE SELOUS GAME RESERVE

Get up close and personal with the hippos in the Selous’ mighty rivers and lakes on a boat safari, perfect in the late afternoons when the wildlife often comes to the shore to drink.

Part of the magic of the Selous is the ability to get out on the water, enjoying the wildlife from a totally different perspective. Watch elephants splashing around to cool off, giraffes bending precariously to take a sip and birds return to their nests to roost for the evening as the sun starts to drop. Perhaps take a fishing rod and try your luck at catching a tiger fish. As the afternoon wears on, find a quiet spot to enjoy a sundowner, listening to the fish eagles calling across the water.

CHIMPANZEE TRACKING IN MAHALE

Hiking through the verdant forest in the Mahale mountains in search of chimpanzees is a heart-racing experience. Watch as these primate cousins stop to groom, eat and build nests in their natural habitat, accompanied by an expert guide.

Begin your trek at the sandy shores of Africa’s deepest lake, Tanganyika and follow your guide through the forest paths up into the Mahale mountains. Wind your way through ancient trees and keep an ear out for distant whoops of the chimpanzees, or cracking branches as they dash through the canopy. You will follow a set trail but it can be steep at times and slippery underfoot, so you’ll need a sense of humour and a good pair of walking shoes. The guides and researchers here know every chimpanzee by name and will tell you about their history and where they fit into the social hierarchy in their troop. You will spend one precious hour with these fascinating creatures, watching them interact, groom one another, carry young ones on their backs and foraging for food. The time flies by so soak up every minute of your time with the chimpanzees before triumphantly returning back to Greystoke to spend the rest of the day.

DIVING IN ZANZIBAR

Located off the eastern coast of Africa, in the warm and clear Indian Ocean, Zanzibar is home to some great diving locations. Head to the tiny atolls off the north coast of Zanzibar, or take a trip to its neighbouring island of Pemba.

With several tiny islands off its shores, it can be argued that when scuba diving, it is best to go to the northern Coast, in which the tiny atoll of Mnemba has varied species of tropical fish across its reefs.

Head further north to the untouched island of Pemba, in which diving experts describe as one of the best diving locations in east Africa. Accessed from Zanzibar by boat, the Pemba channel, and the area surrounding Pemba’s western coast has over 320 coral reef species; twice the amount of any other diving location in this region.

The tiny sand atoll Mesali can be found within the Pemba channel, and it is advised to dive here during an incoming tide, to make the most of clearer waters and to increase the chances of seeing bigger pelagic fish. On the island of Pemba, the Fundu Lagoon is a relaxed boutique hotel with a professional team of PADI qualified instructors, all with specific local knowledge of the Mesali and waters surrounding Pemba. Whilst it is a perfect all year round destination, it may be worth considering timing your visit between November to April when Sharks migrate through the Pemba channel. Throughout the coastline of Zanzibar, most hotels will offer to arrange scuba diving expeditions and training with additional costs, and it will be easy to access the beautiful and untouched Pemba island.

FLAMINGO WATCHING ON LAKE MANYARA

Harder to predict than the Great Migration, the Flamingo migration is equally incredible to witness as they descend on Lake Manyara in their thousands. An amazing photo opportunity or simply the chance to witness these spectacular birds in their element.

Set out from your camp to either enjoy sundowners or coffee on the shore of Lake Manyara in Northern Tanzania whilst watching the sun rise or set over the thousands of blush-coloured birds, or alternatively put on some rubber boots and go wading through the mud among them. Lake Manyara National Park is famous for these beautiful birds that roam the edges of the lake in flocks of thousands during the wet season. There are more than 400 species of birds that inhabit the park so it is a huge favourite with keen birders who can expect to see upwards of 100 different species on any one day.

NGORONGORO CRATER GAME DRIVE

Follow your guide on foot as you explore the Selous, focusing on the smaller details that make up the ecosystem which you often miss on a game drive.

We recommend walking in the morning to make the most of the early morning light. Look for tracks of animals who have passed near to camp overnight as you explore the area with your guide. Stop to admire the birdlife and listen to their calls, watch as warthogs trot past with tails held high like aerials, and learn how the whistling thorn acacia defends itself from grazing antelopes. You may encounter a giraffe or herd of elephants, which feels entirely different to watching from the comfort and security of a safari vehicle. Exploring on foot slows you down, lets you listen to the sounds and breathe in the smells and is an opportunity not to missed as part of your safari here.

SPICE TOUR

With the Spice Islands named as they are you cannot visit this particular part of the world and not delve into its history by taking a Spice Tour on the island.

Zanzibar’s history would not be the same without the cloves, cinnamon, pepper, nutmeg and other spices which have given rise to its name. BOAT CRUISE ON THE KAZINGA CHANNEL

Embark on a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel through the Queen Elizabeth National Park, the most popular safari destination in Uganda, spanning the equator and home to over 95 mammal species and over 600 bird species.

BOAT TRIP ON LAKE MBURO

Take a boat trip on Lake Mburo in the Lake Mburo National Park, Western Uganda. These have to be booked in advance with the lodge but provide guests with a brilliantly unique way of viewing game.

Need to be booked in advance but a boat trip on Lake Mburo is great fun. Hippos and crocodile are aplenty and with any luck you might see a leopard coming down to the lake to drink. Trips take approximately 2 hours and can make a nice change from game drives in safari vehicles.

CHIMP TREKKING

Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda

Kyambura Gorge, also known as the ‘Valley of Apes’, is the only place in the Queen Elizabeth National Park, in the south-west of Uganda, where you can go chimpanzee trekking, in an incredible tropical-rainforest setting right by the Equator line.

The Kyambura Gorge is home to a wide diversity of wildlife, including the only chimpanzees within the Queen Elizabeth National Park. It took a two-year process for the chimpanzees to become familiar with humans and continue their daily activities around them so now visitors can trek through this incredibly tropical forest and watch them in their natural habitat. Sadly reports state that there are only sixteen remaining chimpanzees in this impressive valley that is approximately 1km across and about 100 metres deep. There are also plenty of other primates including red-tailed monkey, black-and-white-colobus, baboon and vervet monkey.

GAME DRIVES – QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK

GORILLA TREKKING IN UGANDA

Gorilla trekking in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is the highlight of visits to Uganda, to see the fascinating mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

The Mountain Gorillas in Uganda cannot be seen in any zoo anywhere in the world due to their endangered status and inability to survive in captivity. They can only be found in the wild in Africa, in the mountains straddling Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. There are only about 786 mountain gorillas left in the world and about half of them can be found in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Mountain Gorillas still seem to many an almost mythical species, not known about by humans until 1902. To be able to go and trek through this impressive mountain wilderness in search of these amazing creatures is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Gorilla trekking in Uganda can be done all year round although most people tend to go from June to September or December to February in order to avoid the rainy seasons.

Due to the remote location of the lake, you are pretty much guaranteed total seclusion and privacy when fishing. Lake Rutundu is stocked with rainbow trout and fishing can also be organised at Lake Alice, a two hour walk further up Mount Kenya. The fishing is fly only and the average catch is 3-4lbs with larger trout reaching up to 6lbs and catch and release is encouraged. You will helicopter up to these striking freshwater lakes up Mount Kenya, from where you can fish away in lakes teaming with trout whilst enjoying the most incredible scenery and views.

A visit to the Giraffe Centre is an educational and rewarding experience, the highlight of most visits being the opportunity to feed the Rothschild’s Giraffes by hand from the raised observation decks.

Each camel safari is unique depending on what the guests want and the routes taken. The safaris can range from three days to two weeks and will take you through some of Kenya’s most wild and un-spoilt areas. Head through Il N’gwesi with its extensive landscapes and plentiful wildlife before heading further North and into the wild mountains of Mathew’s Range. This is mainly a walking safari with the camels carrying supplies but riding the camels is available when the terrain allows. You do not have to be immensely fit, all you need is a sense of adventure.

THE DAPHNE SHELDRICK WILDLIFE TRUST

Founded in 1977 by Dame Daphne Sheldrick, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is one of the pioneering conservation organisations for wildlife and habitat protection in East Africa. Experience a visit to the Orphans’ Project in the Nairobi suburb of Karen.

The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is headquartered in the leafy suburb Karen. Here visitors will find the Orphans’ Project, a programme at the heart of the trust. To date 150 infant elephants have been hand-raised and successfully returned to the wild herds of Tsavo National Park.

Take a visit to the trust, morning or afternoon to find more about the remarkable work of this charitable organisation, interact with the orphaned elephant and rhinos and perhaps contribute to the work through fostering one of the orphans.

THE GREAT MIGRATION

The Maasai Mara is famous for being home to one of nature’s most spectacular events: the Great Migration. Millions of wildebeest cross from Tanzania’s Serengeti to Kenya’s Mara in search of better grazing.

Between July and October the Maasai Mara plays host to the great spectacle that is the wildebeest migration. The vast herds move north from the Serengeti in search of the rich grasses of the Mara plains. A movement of millions of animals, made up in main by wildebeest, but accompanied by zebra, gazelle, hartebeest, eland and a myriad of other bird, insect and mammal species, including the large carnivores.

The iconic image of the migration is the intensity seen on the banks of the Mara River. Great groups of wildebeest and zebra congregate to cross the river, a battle of wills, who will be first to launch into the fast flowing water with its hidden dangers and lurking crocodiles. This is one of the most dramatic events in the animal kingdom, it is raw nature and can be brutal to witness, so be warned!

WALKING IN THE MAASAI MARA

BOAT-RIDE TO CRESCENT ISLAND

Take an engine boat from any of the lodges along the shores and enjoy the hippos and birdlife in the backdrop of the magnificent Mt. Longonot.

Crescent Island is a private Wildlife Sanctuary on the eastern side of Lake Naivasha. The island is a submerged rim of a volcanic crater and here, you can walk among the yellow barked “fever trees” with the possibility of seeing various animals.

Visitors can enjoy the wildlife and tranquil environment. Animals you may see are giraffe, zebra, Thompson’s and Grant’s gazelles, waterbuck, eland, and a great many bird species.The huge fish eagle with it’s distinctive cry is common to the area.

Boat trips on the lake are widely available, and is a great way to spend an afternoon or morning.

Sunsets are always stunning, with the haunting call of a Fish Eagle high over the Lake bringing the day to a perfect end.

CULTURAL VISIT TO MAASAI VILLAGE

Visitors to the village get an insight into the vibrant and still traditional way of life of the Maasai. Learn about the medicinal plants that grow here, the importance of cattle and the stages of life through which all Maasai pass, from young boy or girl to respected elder.

FLYING EXCURSION TO LAKE VICTORIA

When in the Maasai Mara, you may fly by light aircraft to Lake Victoria and enjoy a full English breakfast on arrival at the islands of either Mfangano or Rusinga. Lake Victoria is a spectacular sight, it is Africa’s largest lake and the world’s second widest freshwater lake. Birdlife is abundant and includes the spectacular fish eagles which can be seen perching high in the treetops or dramatically swooping across the lake as they capture fish in their fiery talons. An experienced and knowledgeable fisherman captains each boat as you head out into the lake in search of the legendary giant Nile perch found in these waters -Nile perch weighing over 150 lb are regularly caught. Stop at a traditional fishing village before returning to the airstrip for your flight back to the Mara.
